‘I sought him whom my heart loves’ – our pilgrimage theme

“I sought him whom my heart loves.”  Those words from the Song of Songs reveal a heart that deeply yearns, as the lover seeks her lover, as the bride seeks out her bridegroom.  She wanders far and wide, through the city streets and squares.

They come from the first reading at our Mass on Monday night, creating a backdrop to Mary Magdalen’s story as she seeks out her Lord, the one whom her heart loves.  She too is heartbroken.  She seeks him out among the dead, wants to do all she can do for him now, in her darkest moment.  Filled with sadness, her tears hide the one she loves.  In a state of distress she does not see him who transforms her mourning into joy, her grief into gladness.

The Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham is a place for pilgrims, a place perhaps of those want more, or simply need a new perspective on life which makes them value what they already have.  What or whom do you seek? What do others yearn for? What prayers and deep desires do you bring to this place? What do you hope to see or hear?  Yes, this a place awash with prayer which offers a new encounter with Jesus, with the one whom we see held in the arms of Mary his mother.

Through prayer and sacrament, song and story and in so many other ways, we will draw close to Mary’s Son, seek him out in the silence of a sacred space, or in the talk and chatter at meal time, in times spent alone, or when propping up the bar! The Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham celebrates the Incarnation of God in Christ who has come to make his home with us, and who is present in the fabric of our lives.

At Wednesday’s Mass, we will hear the gospel of the shepherds as they make haste to see all that has happened and there, after seeking him out, they discover Jesus with Mary and Joseph.

Throughout her life, Mary remains close to Jesus—sometimes at a distance but never far away.  She follows his journey, watches his every move, walks to the momentum of his love, and seeks him out when he seems out of sight, like the time she tries to squeeze through the crowds to see him.

May our time here be full of grace and full of love.  May we be drawn closer to the Lord so that clinging to him, we can say with St Paul, “I live now not with my own life but with the life of Christ who lives in me.”
